What Color Is Your Soul?
The other day, I was scrolling through TikTok and saw my bestie post a story looking all drained, captioned "deadline got me messed up." I slid into her DMs to check in, and she said she’s been so stressed lately, staying up until 3 or 4 AM every night, then dragging herself out of bed at 7 AM for work. Honestly, I felt like I could relate lowkey…
Hustling has become a whole vibe for Gen Z; everyone’s trying to prove themselves, make bank, and flex their achievements. But real talk, if you hustle too hard, you might just crash and burn, fam! Too much of anything isn’t great, and going all out without knowing when to chill could lead straight to burnout.
So, where does this hustle culture even come from, and how do we avoid getting sucked into that exhausting cycle?
Honestly, hustling isn’t bad. It shows the energy, creativity, and ambition of Gen Z. But the issue is social media is just a highlight reel, and everyone’s out here trying to build this perfect image, flexing their wins. When you see others thriving, it can create pressure, making you feel like you’re falling behind. So, you dive headfirst into work and school, forgetting to eat or sleep, and you don’t leave any time for yourself.
Then gradually, you start to feel drained, unmotivated, and lose interest in everything. Every morning, all you want to do is stay under the covers, but deadlines are looming, and you can’t even bring yourself to tackle them. Yup, that’s burnout creeping in!
Burnout isn’t a medical condition, but it’s way more dangerous than you think. It doesn’t just make you feel physically and mentally exhausted; it can impact your health, relationships, and future too.
Honestly, I see so many Gen Z folks rushing through life. They dive into making money and building their careers but forget that life has so much more to offer. They forget they need to love and take care of themselves.
So, how do we hustle without burning out? In my opinion, the most important thing is to know who you are, what you want, and where your limits are. Don’t chase after others; focus on yourself and find a path that suits you.
Think about it: do you really like your current job? Are you working out of passion or just for the paycheck? Are you sacrificing too much time and health for work?
If the answer is no, it might be time to reassess. Don’t be afraid to change things up; don’t fear failure. What matters is living authentically and doing what you love.
Also, learn to take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, eat healthy, exercise regularly, and spend time with friends, family, and your hobbies. Don’t forget, you’re a human being, not a machine.
I know, it’s easier said than done. But I believe if we try, we can find that balance between work and life. We can hustle smart and sustainably to achieve success while keeping our health and happiness intact.
What about you? What do you think about hustle culture? Have you ever felt burnout?
